  1. Copy every word exactly as it appears in the translation.
  2. Put the copied text either in quotes or italics.
  3. You don’t have to start at the very beginning. You can leave out beginning words. So when When they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, “He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.”
  4. Using quotes, the scripture looks this way. Notice that the quotation marks around the dialog has to change to single quotes. When they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.’”
  5. Put the book, chapter, and verse in parentheses at the end, inside the last period. Notice that there is no period inside the quotation marks. “When they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, ‘He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her’” (John 8:7).
  6. Put the three-letter translation code inside the parentheses, at the end. “When they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, ‘He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her’” (John 8:7 KJV).
  7. You’re allowed to leave out words. Show that you have left out words with an ellipsis. “When they continued asking him, he said unto them, ‘He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her’” (John 8:7 KJV).
  8. You’re also allowed to substitute clarifying words as long as you don’t change the meaning. A substituted word is put inside square brackets. When the brackets are next to text that is left out, use only the brackets with no ellipsis. “When they continued asking him, [Jesus] said unto them, ‘He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her’” (John 8:7 KJV).
  9. You can add emphasis by italicizing (or de-italicizing certain words). An explanation of the emphasis goes inside the parentheses.
    - “When they continued asking him, [Jesus] said unto them, ‘He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her’” (John 8:7 KJV emphasis added).
    – When they continued asking him, [Jesus] said unto them, “He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her” (John 8:7 KJV emphasis added).
  10. Designate your own rendering that doesn’t match a published translation. “When they kept asking him, Jesus said them, ‘Whoever has no sin should throw the first stone at her’” (John 8:7 paraphrased).
  11. Spell out the book names because many people today aren’t familiar with the abbreviations.
